Flägermeisters: Lund University’s new CTF team

Flägermeisters

Since upper secondary school I’ve always had an interest in competing in CTFs together with friends. There are certain Saturdays where participating in a CTF is just the best thing. For those unfamiliar with the term, CTF (Capture the Flag) competitions are like treasure hunts for security enthusiasts. You essentially partner up in teams to hunt for “flags” by solving puzzles in cryptography, reverse engineering, web security, and more. Every challenge pushes you to think creatively and work under pressure, but also gives you insight into modern ways to protect our digital infrastructure.

This shared enthusiasm wasn’t noticeable on just me, there were many people that wanted us to turn Lund University into a worthy competitor on the CTF scene. At last, me and my friends Emil Scharin and Erik Heimdal finally took the step to form a competitive cybersecurity CTF team right here at the Faculty of Engineering at Lund University. This isn’t just another club – it’s a space where students can get to know the world of cybersecurity, learn practical skills, and have a blast while doing it.

Regular competitions

One of the pillars of our team is our commitment to regular meetups. Even though we are a competitive team, we can’t stress the importance of letting newcomers participate in competitions even just for learning purposes.

These sessions not only build technical expertise but also forge acquaintances among team members, making every meetup a success.

Workshops to teach the latest and greatest

In the ever-evolving world of cybersecurity, learning new concepts and tools is crucial. To ensure our team stays ahead of the curve, we host workshops designed to teach a variety of CTF skills. While mainly having focused on workshops to get started with the CTF concept, we plan on hosting a whole bunch of them in the future to equip our members with the latest knowledge.
